Granted, everyone on here said, nothing to catch in Whittier--especially now. My little brother wanted to get out on the sea kayak today, and I love to be on the water--so I took him. And, if water is there, who would not take a pole or two? We put in at Lazy Otter ramp and puttered out to the creek. I caught the one fish in the water, I think (in attached photo); and promptly chopped him up to use as bait along the bottom.

But, Nah, there t'weren't nuthin' eager to be caught. My bro got cold, and we headed back in. Anyway, I wanted to attach my personal confirmation that the fishing wasn't all that good today.

By the way, what's the ramp that's at the end of the long Inlet Fish dock area? It's down past everything. Is it open for anyone? I have always used Lazy Otter ramp or put in with charter/guides in the marina.

Well, they said there was no nothing to be caught there and you caught one, you proved 'em all wrong!

You know what they say, A bad fishing..

Good effort
See ya on the water..

While generally true, you ALWAYS have a chance if the line is in the water.

The long ramp I think you are talking about is Smittys cove. It's public and the city charges for launch and parking. It's usually where I launch.

Thinking about heading out to jig up some herring.  You can catch halibut there but for real action, head to Seward or the inlet.

Whiskey gulch was a bust for me too. Lost a couple and landed a small one that I threw back. My friend that I let use my outback caught a couple 10 pounders though. But that was 12 hours of fishing effort.

I saw the charter guys had a good day though. Lots of big halibut hanging on the racks visible from the highway. A couple I'm sure we're over 100 pounds.

I saw virtually no one partly due to fog but I also think most boats were fishing really far out.

I managed to get 3.5 miles off shore. But we had all the action within a mile of shore

Not to Hijack the whittier thread but...

Matt, did you see any jumpers?  A theory I have is the initial wave of sockeyes that hit the inlet do so in the middle of the inlet.  Would not be surprised if Halibut are moving off shore to intercept.  The waves that hit closer to the beach come later.  I don't think the spawners move closer to shore until around Deep Creek.  Even in the North transect line the fish aren't always running closest to the beach.  study this.  but they will take it down probably today to start this year's index.

There's always bait fish closer to shore and a 10 pound chicken probably doesn't consider a red salmon a prey so I'd think they should be around.

Hmmm..... My time is going to be severely limited over the next few months.  I was hoping you guys would find fish!!!

I saw one salmon jump off whiskey and one off deep creek.

Not sure what they were. The one off whiskey looked pretty big.

Oh no, that's no good.  Just when you want to be on the water the most.

Hijack away! I gotta get somewhere to bring up a halibut this year or else my longer-range goals are screwed! My goal--this year, a halibut--any size. Next year halibut 30+ pounds. I'll read any and all replies that will help me toward those goals. :-)

I had plans for a Kenai rafting/lake weekend this week, but my wife and kids are wimping out b/c of the rain. And I'm happier to have them bail now than mid-trip. But that means for me at least a day to get out from Whittier....as far as I can...to see if I can get anything to be interested. I realize that from there, I'm probably biding my time til the coho come in. But it's water!
