thought these were interesting - at less than 5lbs would be a great way to fish remote hike in lakes.

has anyone had experience with this type of kayak before?  there seem to be quite a few brands out there all in the 5-10lb range.  could easily fit that into a backpacking trip.

Looks like a great option for spontaneous paddling. Wonder how it would hold up around fishhooks. Could be fun fly fishing on small lakes...very tempting.

very interesting, does it say anywhere if the weight of the pump is included or is that additional weight?

pretty sure the pump would be added wieght.  but should be able to find fairly light foot pumps.  a co-worker of mine was looking into picking up a kayak like this for a trip he was planning with his kid in montana (maby it was wyoming cant remember now).  but they were going to hike in a couple days, then inflate thier kayaks and float back out - sounded like a ton of fun.

A couple of years ago, while running Kitchen Sink Rapid, a fun Class IV rapid in the Beartrap Canyon on the Madison River in Montana, we encountered two guys from Alaska in pack rafts.  They told us about some epic backpacking/climbing/floating trips they had done with these rafts.  Their rafts were very light, and they claimed that they packed down to the size of a loaf of bread.  They had added light nylon spray skirts which attached to their rafts with Velcro.  A couple of pictures of the guys running the rapid are shown below.  The rafts handled the rapid quite nicely.  While we ate lunch below the rapid, they carried their rafts back up and ran the rapid four more times, with only one flip.

The blog http://fishingandhiking.com/ spends A LOT of time on the Minam on his packraft. I've been considering one for some time now that I can just stash in the truck.

I've been researching these, as well as any other affordable options (we need two) for an upcoming backpacking trip into a series of four, secluded trout lakes with my nephew. We both have float tubes, but they weigh quite a bit over the four pound mark. Of course, its sort of "apples to oranges" with initial weights, both needing pumps, one needs a paddle, one doesn't, waders required with the float tube, but probably not the inflatable kayak/raft, etc.

So far, the 4lb packlite that Crabbycabby started the thread with is looking pretty tempting  :icon_thumright:

Yeah I did some looking online and the Alpackas seem to be the best with proven durability, but they are pricey. I'd consider the packlite and 4-piece paddle for keeping in the car along with the "emergency" fishing rod.
Relax. You'll live longer.
