How's this coming along?  I've been following it and sure would like to take part.

There are two county parks close by with camping
Webb County Park with 38 sites
http://www.co.tillamook.or.us/gov/Parks/Documents/Webb.pdf
and
Whalen Island further north with 34 sites
http://www.co.tillamook.or.us/gov/Parks/Documents/Whalen%20Island.pdf

Someone else asked about Depoe Bay an hour south.  Beverly Beach State park is just south with plenty of camping (after Labor Day).  Easy access to Otter Rock, Gull Rock and Cape Foulweather.

Camping sounds perfect for me, and my budget.  So we pretty much need a wet or dry suit for this right?  Are there places to rent them for the weekend?  OR shall I start saving now?  Thanks

Oh man, the Portland Prirate Festival is the weekend of the tournament.   My toddler son is a pirate fan.  I guess it'll give my wife something to do while I'm gone.

Anyway, I guess we need to figure out how many spots to reserve and or leave it up to everyone to get their own site.  Webb County park seems like the best option.

Some info on the Webb campground.  There are two types of tent spots: those with brown markers and those with blue markers.  Sept 21 is still considered "summer rate".   If we can team up on spots we should be able to get 2-3 tents on each.

We currently have 15 votes in the poll, any idea if this means we'll likely have 15 people showing up?

Quote
Brown Site Marker: ... Summer Base Rate $12/night

Allows one Tent and one Vehicle. One extra Tent may be added to the site for $5 per night. Extra vehicles are not allowed.
Brown Tent sites will provide for two each 10’ x 10’ tent pads. Suggested campsite limit is 8 people.

Blue Site Marker: ... Summer Base Rate $15/night

Allows one Tent and one Vehicle. Two extra Tents may be added to the site for $5 each per night plus one extra Vehicle may be
added to the site for $3 per night. Blue Tent sites will provide for three each 10’ x 10’ tent pads. Suggested campsite limit is 12
people.

Arrr Matey,

September's not that far off.  I'm up for sharing a site as long as I can park there and get to my meds quickly!

I guess we should check on whether there is overflow parking for extra cars/trucks.

Cape Kiwanda RV Park has camping. It's directly across the street from the beach. I stayed there years ago, and we walked over with our boats to surf. They also have RV spots (of course), and I believe some small cabins as well:

http://www.capekiwandarvresort.com

This site lists other campgrounds, hotels, etc in the area:

http://www.hikercentral.com/campgrounds/109472.html

The overflow parking is pretty extensive, from what I remember. Even on crowded days in the summer I don't recall an issue. The brewpub next door was always handy as well, and may have caused the occasional unexpected overnight stay...

10 tent sites still available as of this posting. $25/night.  4 persons per site with one vehicle.

3 cabins available.  $105/night.  Sleeps 5.  Bathroom & kitchenette.  Bring own bedding

No overflow parking but could park outside the park.

Thanks for the info Alkasazi and FishSniffer.

I was just looking at the Cape Kiwanda RV Resort website.  Looks like they also cater to groups (mostly seniors in RV's I suspect).  I'm guessing we won't be large this year to warrant it, but maybe next year would keep this in consideration.  It would be nice to have a private area like a clubhouse to ourselves.

From the map, this RV park seems pretty close to Webb county park.  While it would be nice to all camp together, I'm thinking it might just be easier to have everyone make their own plans/reservations and meet up wherever we can get critical mass (one campground or the other, maybe the brew pub).  If someone feels otherwise, I'm willing to let them try and organize some campsites.

I think we'd want to have the derby on Saturday morning, so camping Friday and Saturday nights would be ideal.  Here's my general vision for a schedule based roughly on the Elk and Mendo derbies in NorCal.

-Drive down after work on Friday (earlier if you get the time off), check in to your campsite and meet up for some beers at the brew pub.
-Meet on the beach in the early morning to launch.
-Fish all day
-Meet back at the beach in the early afternoon (say 3 pm) for a weigh in (anyone have a good digital scale? If we can't get a good scale we could go by length).
-Prizes and potluck dinner Saturday night.
-Leave Sunday morning (or stay and fish if you want).

Any preferences on derby format?  Here are some of my ideas.

1. heaviest single fish
2. heaviest two, three, etc.. fish
3. heaviest stringer
4. AOTD format .. i.e. earn points like AOTY based on length for fish you catch that day.

My preference would be to not require heaviest stringer.  Not everyone needs a full stringer or fish and killing that many of a derby seems a waste.  The heaviest single fish is probably the most popular in the events I've participated.  The AOTD format could be done with photo evidence much like the AOTY so those who want to catch and release all their fish could.  I suppose single longest fish could also be a possibility.

Anyway, should we limit this to rockfish (greenling/cabezon/rockfish/lingcod)?  Or open it to salmon and halibut also (if in season)?

Any other ideas?  I think rather than a poll this time, Polepole, Zealander and myself will just make a decision on format, but that doesn't mean we aren't up for some feedback.

I just split the planning info into a new thread and made it sticky.

What size are you?  Maybe someone has a spare you can borrow.

Anyway, there seems to be a few surf shops in Pacific City, any of them that rent boards will most likely rent wetsuits as well.  For example, you can rent a wetsuit and booties for a full day for $26 here..
http://www.kiwandasurfco.com/html/surf_equipment_rental_rates_.html

You might also consider craigslist.  You might be able to buy a used wetsuit for the cost of only a couple days of rental.  Look for a surfing wetsuit and not a diving wetsuit.  The later will be very hard to paddle in.  Don't forget booties for your feet and some sort of wind breaker (wind can chill you pretty quickly in a wet wetsuit out of the water).

Please_Send,

I have a 1/8 inch farmer johns I used for years until I got my new surfing suit two weeks ago.  That and a windbreaker could do the trick.  But yes, booties too.  You don't need the $80 like they have upat the SCUBA shop on Barbour.  I got a nice basic pair for $40 at Ocean Pulse here in Newport.

Don't forget a comfortable PFD that's non-restrictive.
