I spoke with the caretaker at Webb County Park this afternoon.

In addition to the per night fee the county apparently adds a $5 non-refundable registration fee which is not deducted from the first nights fee.  So, it would be $20 the first night.

They currently have no reservations booked for 20/21 Sep.  The gal (Diana) suggested they could be open to a group such as ours but most of the folks I've seen who've booked are at Cape Kiwanda RV (right next door).  As a group we might be able to negotiate the $5 non-refundable registration fee with the county.

Good point WR.  Hopefully that's just a typo on FishSniffer's part, it might be a bit lonely for him, but it would explain why the park has no reservations currently (Aug 20-21 lies on a Wednesday and Thursday).

If it is the september dates I would love to make it.  I have a beach house about 20-25 minutes away near netarts bay. If the ocean is lumpy there is always crabs and clams in the bay.

It was, in fact.  My error.  Still, they don't have any bookings for Sep 19/20/21.

Should we think about getting a preliminary headcount and a group consensus on if we want a group site or not?  If we had numbers I could negotiate with the County.

I like the idea of a group site at the county park.  Hopefully if we have enough interest for this to go forward those that made reservations at the RV park can still cancel. If not, they are pretty close together and I'm sure we could still do the get together at the group site.

Put me down for the head count, possibly with my wife and son.

I've got two other kayak fishing buddies interested so far (neither have internet).  We're thinking of heading up a week or so earlier for the day to check it out.

Should we have teams of just go solo?  We'd be "Team Rogue" since they suggested tonight they'd be interested in sponsoring us.

Will there be a registration fee to benefit something or help with expenses or is this an informal gathering?

Ah registraiton fees...  For most events like this that I've gone to, there is a fee ($20-$50) and it goes towards paying for the group campground (if that's what was being used) and/or cash payout or prize purchase.  Usually someone has a contact with a kayak company and can get a kayak for cheap and the registration money helps pay for that as a prize.  As the events get bigger the kayak companies will often donate the prize kayak.

So.. we should decide on a registration fee and given that we probably won't have a ton of participants, a cash payout would probably be best.. say 60:30:10  (1st:2nd:3rd).

As for teams, those would probably be informal but encouraged.
FishSniffer, if the Rogue Brewery wants to sponsor you great.. maybe they can pay your registration fees for you and your team mates.  My personal preference would be to have them donate or discount some beer for the post tournament gathering?  Mmm.. Rogue brewery (one of my favorites).

Now how much should we set registration at?  How does $30 per person sound to everyone?

I agree w/ the reg fee. It always goes to make the tourney a lot more fun by adding prizes of some sort. $30 sounds fair right to me. The group campground also sounds great. I'll be there w/ the wife and dog. Did someone say free beer? Rogue... free beer.... aaagghhhhhh.....

Even though I don't care for their beers, we should give the Pelican every opportunity since it's their backyard.  But, if they choose not to, and some of the registration proceeds went to charity (one we could all vote on), I'm hopeful the Rouge would step up to the plate.

I'm all for free beer, especially Rogue!

Ideas?

I'm all for moving this down to Newport next year if the Rogue brewery is interested in stepping up the plate.  ;D

As for charity.. generally the way I've seen this done in the past is to hold a raffle.  The NCKA guys have had great success with this and have raised thousands for local fishing advocacy organizations.  Basically we solicit donations for raffle prizes from members and local businesses and sell tickets to the participants at the events. During the post-tournament shin-dig we raffle off the prizes.  The success of such raffles again seems to depend on participation.  At NCKA events, everyone generally buys $20-$40 and there are about 50 members at events... so that's $1000-$2000 raised.  I think if we could raise $400-$500 with say 20 members participating that would be pretty good.

Any interest in this?  Any ideas about charities to donate to?  I'm hoping that given FishSniffer's connection to NW Steelheaders he should know some worthy programs we could raise money for.

Here's the current Raffle thread for the tournament that Zeelander and I are going to next week just to give you an idea what I'm talking about.

I'll see if I can't get some donations from the boyz at RAM MOUNTS for some prizes for the OR derby.

Brian

This thread seems to have taken a snooze and since we're only a month and a half away.... Lets kick it up a notch.

I'll tell you about a program that couldn't be more deserving.  Every year I put on Kids Fishing Day here in Newport.  First year (2006) over 50 kids, last year over 300 and this year almost 450.  Problem is I have to bus families in due to extremely limited parking at the reservoir and a one lane road with a blind curve.

The first year Mid-Columbia Bus Company donated their services!  Last year our transportation bill was about $300.  This year it was almost $950.  I signed the contract so I'm in the hole for it and we're several hundred $$ short.  Fortunately MidCo has been very lenient on when they get the payment.  But they still want it.

I'm not sure I'll be able to put on the event next year if fuel prices keep going up.  While most of these kids are disadvantaged, if gas prices triple again it would be around $2850 and far outside the reach of donations in this small town.  Certainly, charging the kids for this event on "Free Fishing Weekend" sends the wrong message.

If anyone else has suggestions for a charity lets get them all on the table now.  I'd guess that, at some point we'll have to vote for which would receive the donation.

Nice idea FS.

Who'd like to be on the planning committee to get this going?  Time to get going on planning ...
