The new Outcast Pac900 and the new mods to the Malone Trailer

Modified my Malone Trailer (again)… I had to have a way to transport my new Outcast Pontoon boat along with my new kayak (the one I haven’t yet bought). I made a plywood platform which is large enough to haul the pontoon with a Malone J-Loader on the sidewalk side for the kayak (see photos).
I made this in such a way that if I wish I can remove the pontoon boat, add a Malone SeaWing in the middle with a second J-Loader and haul three kayaks.

As shown, it will easily haul two stacked pontoon boats along with one kayak.

The platform is made with plywood and fir boards all glued and screwed in wood drift-boat fashion overkill then painted with a sealer and four coats of a deck paint that is supposed to last very well.

I splashed and slimed the pontoon boat yesterday in Salem’s Walter Wirth Lake (pond). I trolled a #60 chrome/blue HotShot which I had modified with a single Siwash barbless hook instead of the stock treble hook. I had several take downs that didn’t stick yet landed two small but pretty planters I released to be caught and kept by others.

I have heard there are Bass in the pond so I cruised into the shallows at the southernmost end and cast an old Heddon River Runt which runs about 2’ deep and managed a small feisty Bass which was also released.

This Outcast Pac900 is a feather on the water, easy to row and reacts quickly. My last pontoon the Outcast Pac1000 had 18” tubes with a high frame making it very difficult to use kick fins. The new Pac900 used 16” tubes and a lower frame. It will be very easy to use fins in this boat, but I expect it to be a bit of a wet ride in the Whitewater of the McKenzie River this summer.

I am having a local Salem Metals man do changes to the front of the frame to add a Scotty rod mount for back-trolling flies and plugs. I’ve tried many combinations in an attempt to use what exists, but it seems that it is difficult to arrange a decent back-trolling rod mount largely due to the travel of the oars. I am confident the new design will be what is needed. When done, I’ll post photos.

Once you have been fishing from a yak for a while you will forget all about the pontoon. I can't remember where I stored my float tube?
