I met up with Morgan again this past December and we hit La Jolla in search of white seabass and yellowtails. Morgan hit a beauty of a white early in the morning.  I had a hit but it didn't stick.  They proved to be finiky and we moved on later in the morning to see if we could find some home-guard yellows.  Sure enough, we marked schools roaming around about once every half-hour once we found the right spot. We yo-yo'd iron jigs for the rest of the day and at about 2pm a freight train hit my iron as I was coming up off the bottom.  This thing ended up being 20 lbs but fought with three times the strength of an equivalent salmon.  With the drag buttoned on a Daiwa Saltist Black Gold 35 reel (20 pounds of drag) and a stout St. Croix conventional rod there was nothing I could do to stop it from making three very strong runs.  If you ever get the chance to hunt these bad boys, DO IT!!

 That was awesome Jeff.

A bucket list fish for sure.
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

I have a great recipe for yellowtail. :) Good stuff.  Being from Baja, my dog really likes fried yellowtail blood line.

OK.  That was pretty awesome!  Fun part when it starts ripping line, all you can do is sit there and wait!  Congrats - looks like an amazing day.

Great catch!
Was this a self-guided trip?  My parents live in SoCal.  Next time I go down for a visit I'm going to bring my kayak.

Is there a prime time of year for this fishery?
