Sorry Richard, I too was looking forward seeing  those special moments of yours! I also missed out on photos of my first wipeout. I wanted Kim to take some photos of me at Devils Elbow on my first surf launch, but she had to stay home and WATER THE GARDEN instead.

Hi Folks,

We had a great time at the Oregon Coast Derby.  The conditions were great and the weather held through the Saturday evening potluck.  My first trip on the ocean was a blast.  Sea lions, porpoises, and seeing Haystack Rock from the far side in my kayak was pretty cool.

We got some photos of the beach and the potluck.  Good food and lots of fun.  Next year will be something to look forward to.  Thanks to Brian, Allen, and Bryce for putting this on - Alan (amb) & Sue

thanks again to Allen, Brian, Bryce, and everyone else who helped set this up. I had a great time meeting everyone & hanging out. I had to throw back the cabezon I caught, but it was still my first catch out of the ocean, so pretty happy about that. Also learned a valuable lesson or two in keeping a hand on my gear, or at least having it secured. And the weather on Saturday on great, made waking up in the rain much easier on Sunday. Can't wait to do it again!

Hey Pole,

Do I get my choice of colors?  Is it an angler model?  Do you have a picture?
I finally looked up the specs on my prize and I'm freakin' stoked!    :blob1:

Now to dust off the hole saw, drill bits, rivet gun and industrial sized tube of GOOP!  ;D

I haven't seen the yak yet as it's waiting for me at NWOC.  I had to bust down to CA but will be home on Thursday and will go pick up the yak on Friday.  I was hoping to post some pics with my own report, but I left the card reader at home.

Zee met me at my house on Friday morning around 6 and we were on the road shortly thereafter.  Managed to mostly avoid traffic on the way down.  Got to the site around 11:30 and set up camp.  Richard showed up shortly thereafter.  We went into "town" to get licenses, but also stopped off at the Sportsman's Bar and Grill for some lunch.  Zee and I launched at about 2 as Richard wandered the town.  Headed out to the haystack rock and dropped the lure in.  Like Zee said, I caught a nice black and released it for karma's sake as did Zee with his first black.  D'oh!  We didn't measure them for AOTY.  It's ok as we got some bigger ones later.  I measured a 20 incher and Zee got his 19 incher.  I also got a nice greenling, a china, and an underling ... all released.  I also had one other nice hookup for a short while.  It felt a little heavier than the others and was giving that ling cod head shake type of feeling.  No joy though.  The launch and landing went well for me.  Zee had a little (very little) mishap on the landing.  No big deal.  The seas and swell were calm and we had some nice weather to look forward to on derby day.

The rest of the guys started showing up in the evening and we had a few beers and a nice big fire at amb's site.  Thanks Alan for bringing all the wood.  We woke up the next morning and finished off the last of the signins.  Everyone was on the water by a little after 8.  We had a nice group launch straggling about 4-5 others that launched earlier.  I swear we made it all out ok.  I had gone first and had turned around to check everyone else coming out.  I saw Richard come out last over the top of 2 nice waves and thought we all had made it home free.  Sorry Richard, I guess I should have watched you over the 3rd wave.   :'(

Saw bsteves hook up twice early and heard over the radio he got a mid size ling.  Later Spot did a paddle by and showed me his red.  Nice fish I thought to myself, it'll probably give Brian's ling a run for the money.  A little later Alkasazi hooked up a nice cabby and he brought it over for the positive ID.  I saw his rod hanging over the edge, then a little later I saw him pulling up line sans rod.  He said his rod went over.  Then he said the reel was in freespool.  Double D'oh!!!  I snagged his line and tried to send my lure down it to snag his rod.  It hit bottom but I couldn't snag it.  Before I could try again he got tension on the line and was bringing up the rod ... until it went completely slack.  Triple D'oh!!!  Oh well.  Them the breaks.

Up until now I hadn't hooked a thing.  But then things started to heat up.  CNR's a cabbie.  Then another one.  And another one.  Paddled around looking for more love but could only find more cabbies.  I ended up CNR-ing 6 total and nothing else until late in the day when I got a small black, also CNR'd.  That was my day.  6 cabs, all on a root beer scampi tail that Zee gave me.  At least I didn't have to release anything too big like Zee and his 23" cab the day before and bsteves and his 24" cab this day.

Headed in to a nice landing and weighed Bsteve's ling as well as a Zees 3.75 pound black.  Also weighed Dave's 3.25 pound black.  Headed to camp and relaxed a bit.  Weighed Spot's vermillion which indeed beat out Brian's ling.  At about 10 til 5, Ron showed up with a limit of blacks including a 3.75 to tie Zee for third place.

Final showing was spot in first (Trident 13) , Brian in second (AT Paddle Fishstix), and Ron ro-sham-bo'd over Zee to clinch third (Stohlquist Fisherman's PFD).  Soon after the food started showing up.  Dave's beans, Brian's ribs, I fried up some of the donated fish (thanks Brian for the ling and blacks), as well as a lot of other food.  We filled up our plates and feasted.  Finished it off with Jason making up some to-die-for smores!!!  Also Brian made up some peach cobbler!!!

Lot's of story being told around the fire with a lot of great people.  It was really really nice meeting you all.  You all are THE BEST!!!

The next morning Zee, Jay, and I decided to give it one last go.  We wanted to head out to where Ron was killing the blacks.  He had found them feeding on the surface on the outside of the haystack.  The wind/swell was up a bit and it was a tad bumpy on the way out.  So sorry to see Jay not doing so well, but we rallied and got him in safe and sound.  Zee did a great job with the tow assist after Jay chucked.  I hit the beach first and turned around to help Jay come in.  But he timed it exactly right and got in safe and sound with needing an assist.  Way to pull it together!!!  Decided to call it a day and wash up our gear and head home.  That's it.  What a weekend.  Pac City is really a nice place to hold a derby.  I think we'll strongly consider being back next year, perhaps a little earlier when the ocean salmon season is still open.  Looking forward to seeing more of you out next year.

-Allen

P.S.  Pics to come as soon as I get home and have a chance to upload them.

hey, while i think about it,  anyone know where my scale set went?? looked for it this evening when i was washing up the gear again and cant find it.. would like to have it when i hit the nisqually this weekend since the salmon have finally started moving in and hitting anything that moves.

and, pole? i really 'preciate your concern, but even with you doing the saint allen imitation, i doubt anyone or anything could have kept me from being tossed like i was both times on the way out. as FFTW, brain and Spot have all said, sometimes even the best have a bad day too..and i'm far from that. no worries.. other than the radio being salt soaked and dead, the only other casualties were two lights that dint survive the soaking they got...

FYI folks, those orange plano's that are supposed to be "waterproof"? they arent... thinking about drilling a series of drain holes in mine to see if that would help ..but , i bought it to keep things dry in the 1st place.. it failed that test.

tip from scott that day ; double dry bag everythign and take the minimal you need.. lesson (s) learned.
