Is it ever too early to start planning for next year?

Psssttt!!!  Moutcha Bay Resort has confirmed they would love to host the derby next year.  That'll make for a shorter paddle.

I might have to make it up next year.  I could use the practice netting tournament winning trophy salmon.   ;D

What are the chances of having it a week or 2 earlier than Labor day?  That is a family traditional holiday I cannot miss without severe WAF penalties....and the fish might be brighter...

It's something we are actively discussing ...

Recall that Matt_K went up a week earlier this year and got into some nice brighter fish.  With labor day "early" this year and "late" next year, having an earlier derby has some merits.

In 2007 we had a mixed batch of fish.  On the Sunday a fresh batch of fish appeared to have come through with some nice bright fishing being caught.  Of course the Bay was loaded with darkies as well since the fish had been there for at least 3 weeks prior.

Another selling point for an earlier derby is that earlier in the season, most of the power boats will still be concentrating on the "outside" as there will still be a fair amount of fish to be caught.  This year the fishing was on the poorer side on the outside and it showed with a lot of power boaters fishing the bay.

My regular PB fishing buddy bought a pair of Revolutions for him and his wife (she LOVES it) and I am going to toss out the idea of a late July/early August Moutcha trip.

In talking to Moutcha Jim, I'm led to believe these fish first show up in the Bay in the middle of August.  Not sure what's going on in late July or early August.

You may also want to check out this trip ... http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,347.15.html

We did this a couple of years ago to Friendly Cove at the mouth of Nootka Sound.  However, for the past couple of years, again according to Moutcha Jim, apparently the main run has been making the inside run around the north side of Nootka Sound, bypassing the main Nootka fishing grounds.  And I think most of that area is closed off.   :(  Hmm ... I wonder what the logistics are for fishing Esperanza Sound.

What are the possibilities of having yaks available for those of us who would think of travelling for such a trip...

We had a load of demos (OK, WS, and Hobies) available this year.  Probably could have accommodated 10-12 yakless fishermen.

Hmm.. not having to haul everyone's kayak would make carpooling a lot easier... potentially more people per vehicle.

Been considering this also, but I'll take my kayak if I go.  Having demos available would be pretty cool though and like Brian said, make carpooling easier.  I just might stick to Z like glue so he can net my fish.

Well I got lucky with that fish that day. The other days Pole was on FIRE just willing fish on his hook. That's a very special place though. If you are thinking about it really just make the push and do it next year. It's what it's cracked up to be. And Spot, Game on bruddah!! ;D

I'm in. Hopefully the shop will "sponsor" me....I.E. pay for me to go up and fish with you guys!  ;)

I think that's the only way they would let me leave in peak season....It's work related right?

i'll just tell you guys how awesome Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe is, and it's a write off!

I work at a kayak shop....Jealous?

don't be. I work at a kayak shop :P

Have they determined the dates for 2009 yet?
