How about a monthly semi-formal gathering?  Basically a gathering each month to take advantage of a different seasonal fishery, maybe concentrating on AOTY species.

January ?
February ?
March ?
April  Springers
May ?
June Astoria Strugeon
July ?
August B10 Salmon
Sept Pac City rockfish/lingcod
October  Coho or Tilly Chinook
November ?
December ?

Open to suggestions.

Brian

Sounds like a great idea to me.  The Pacific City Derby got me hooked on ocean fishing, but it would be fun to try out some other locations and fishing techniques too.  This sounds like it could be alot of fun to me.  Good idea Brian!

Excellent, esp if it is somewhat closer to WA so us northerners don't have to drive 1/2 to eternity...

Oh, I think some of the events should be in WA and some in OR... a few in the ocean, a few in tidewater, a few on rivers, and a few on lakes.

For example.. in a few weeks there are plans to meet half way on Silver Lake in WA for some bass fishing.  This event was supposed to be a service project for veterans, but there were liability issues so it's been canceled.  A lot of people had already planned to volunteer for the event so we're just going to have an NWKA gathering instead now.

I think PolePole had a similar idea to this earlier in the year when he considered offering AOTY bonus points for winning (i.e. catching the biggest fish) at semi-formal gatherings like these.  That wouldn't happen this year, but it's something to consider for next year.

I'm still trying to figure out the fisheries around here, so I'm more than happy to hear suggestions.  So if you have a favorite fishery that you'd like to share with some fellow kayak anglers let us now where and when and we'll work on planning for it.

Ah.. lake names.  I love them as much as I love all the various common names for fish.  I think there are about five Blue Lakes and four Lost Lakes in Oregon that I can think of.

Anyway, it's the Silver Lake that just west of Mt. Saint Helens.

Brian,
This is genius. I love the idea of spreading these out to match AOTY species seasons.

Okay.. glad you like it.  Now I just need help filling the calendar in.  I think one per month would be a good goal (that's about how often my wife lets me out lately).

Downtown Portland in the winter is pretty good for sturgeon, lots of shaker action with the occasional keeper thrown in.

Most of the lakes are stocked in the winter with trout, if we can find one with some nice brood stock stocking that would be better.   A trip up to Chelan or down to ODell for some macks might be nice.

Bass (LMB/SMB), panfish, walleye can be just about any time in the spring, summer or fall.   They can even be combined.

Cabezon would normally fit in with the Pac City derby (lings and rockfish) if they don't prematurely close it again.

Halibut??  I haven't a clue.. Pac City again?

How about a John Day (or Washington Equivalent) float?

San Juans?

Incorporate to an existing event like the Salmon Derby in Seattle?

A steelhead float around Kalama?

Where are you Washington guys with suggestions?

There are some very nice salmon and steelhead runs up the Clackamas during the summer.  Late June and July would be good there.  Kokanee hit the feeding binge in Lake Billy Chinook in June.  I had an opportunity to see some salmon and steelhead being recycled in the Clackamas this summer on July 30th.  There were some very impressive fish there that day.  That would be something to get into - Alan

I like the idea - hopefully it doesn't fizzle out...
Maybe someone local to each meeting place can help put together the pertinent info: launch location, nearby good eats, camping spots, what kind of gear and method for the target fish etc...

Washington:  Puget Sound has tons of opportunity - the exact location should be decided within a day or two of the meeting so that we can decide based upon wind forecasts

Drano Lake (springers)

American Lake -  Kokanee, Rainbows, bass

Rufus Woods - Triploids

How about a crabbing/clamming trip?  Netarts bay on the Oregon coast is nice. great state park with cabins and yurts, lots of access. fall and winter produce the best quality crabs and the clams are at their best flavor. I would be willing to put together info on this if there is interest.

Shad on the columbia or willemette in late may?

I don't know much about it but spot prawn fishing in washington is something that has always perked my interest.

I like the idea of lots of gatherings spread out in both washington and oregon.  Gives a guy multiple opportunities to participate and still be able to stay within their time/travel/funding budget.

I'm sure if we can get a decent list of potential events, we can assign some local people to figure out the logistics... (dates, launches, camping).

Keep the ideas coming.  Remember to include general locations, months and potential species.  I'll compile the list for review.
