On The Brighter Side - Russian River Opens Sanctuary on 1st Day of Season

With very good numbers of sockeye showing on the Kenai king salmon sonar in the Lower river since back in May to the present, ADFG has made an assessment that they will easily achieve their 22K-42K escapement goals this year. So on 12:01am on June 11th the Sanctuary at the confluence of the Russian and Kenai rivers will be open to fishing. (This area is normally closed until July 15th or when ADFG has determined they will reach early run spawning goals.)

Its apparent with hardly any tourist anglers coming to Alaska that there will be ample numbers of fish getting through the Alaskan anglers gauntlet to make their numbers. Limits are still Three per day, six in possession. The run will be just an average return but with fewer anglers its going to be easy to make numbers. And there is always the chance down the road that if there are too many escaping they could raise the limit.

I just love the clearwater fishing on the Russian. Guess I'll have to schedule a trip or two. Seniors get Ferry Ride and Day Use parking for half price if you have a Senior Pass.

The reds look OK. But they have closed down the King fishing in the salt water down to Point Bluff (this includes Whisky Gulch). Anybody know about the frequency of catching feeder kings off the Homer spit?

A friend of mine who runs a charter out of Homer went out last Thursday evening on a scouting trip for feeders. They ended up hitting three kings trolling just outside of China Poot Bay. He said what was strange was the fish were all near the surface. They didn't use downriggers, just a dipsy diver set at 10 feet. I've been watching the Spit webcam and occasionally there will be one boat out fishing towards the Green Can which may not be a good indication for king fishing. The Dolly Varden are in now too. He got one that hit 7 pounds and has seen a few beach anglers on the end of the Spit land a few too.
