Hello all,

I'm a highschool student in Portland who is looking to start kayak fishing by buoy 10, any bays, and maybe some ocean water for rockfish/lings. My budget for a kayak is less than 2k, so I would probably need a used one. Anyone near Portland have one for sale that works for my budget and interest in fishing?

Thanks

Check out the classifieds section of this forum - lots of boats coming and going.  Good to troll CL daily as well.  $2k or so should be able to get you started, especially if you aren't married to the idea of a pedal drive.

If you haven't tested fishing kayaks before, you might try Next Adventure Paddle Sports' demo days which are in Scappoose from time to time...check out their website for the deets.

A pre-emptive welcome - to fishing addiction at it's finest!!

It’s addictive, you can’t see the classified section I think till you hand made a few posts not sure if the count. Your off to a good start , what’s your physical activity level, any experience with ocean waters before (charters or large ships)?  What fishing experience do you have? Also keep your eyes peeled for the open invites, I’m in Tillamook and have a couple extra kayaks. Biggest thing I’ll tell ya is try before you buy!! I don’t mean a quick 5 minute test float I mean put some time in a boat to make sure it’s what you want and your comfortable in it. You’ll need $$$ for safety gear also so break the bank on the boat be sure you got money fir the essentials. Welcome aboard.

Welcome! I had a very similar budget starting out. Moreso to see if I liked it enough to get a more expensive kayak. This ended up with me ordering an Ocean Kayak Prowler 13' online for $850 shipped. It was great! but I wish I would have saved and just gotten a more expensive one to begin with, I did that this year  ;D If you ever find yourself around Tillamook and want to try out either of mine I bet we could work something out. As Mojo said try something out before you buy it! The Hobie dealer over here in Pacific City also demos almost every model available any day of the week. The Hobie brand will be difficult to find for under 2k. But if you liked em enough and figured out you liked you would know what model to keep an eye out for when a used one comes up.

I'm pretty physically active, and I'm sure I can paddle for a few hours on a kayak easily.  I have been fishing my whole life, and have gone out on a boat to buoy 10 multiple times and have fished down at catalina islands in cal with a boat.
