Hi,

Just got into kayak fishing this year.  Never really had a good body of water to kayak on until I moved to Seattle.  Puget Sound is so calm it's awesome.  I came from Chicago with raging Lake Michigan.  Every year 5+ people get swept off of the running trail on that lake and end up drowning from 15+ foot waves.  Needless to say kayaking is that not popular out there.

I actually trained for it running.  I worked up to 15-17 miles per run then bought the yak.  I drive a Hobie Mirage Compass with the turbo fin upgrade.  Some days I hit 25 miles or more trolling for salmon or heading to Bainbridge or whatever.

If anyone wants to go out some time let me know!  I've been having a lot of luck with Chinook lately (no keepers but lots of jacks and wild Chinook), I've had modest success with coho, and I think like most of you I can hit my limit on flounder in an hour or so.  I'd really like to give halibut a shot but don't have the nerve to try it solo.

Yeah, he beats me. My personal best is 24 mi in one outing, and that's in a Revo covering 4-5 spots jigging. Towing gear in a compass the whole time... This dude's legs probably look like he just finished the Tour De France

Welcome to the forum.  Wow, 15-17 miles a run.  When I "run" I shoot generally for 4-5.  The only time I work up to 12-15 is when I am training for a Spartan Beast race (which were all cancelled this year).  I am too old (62) to put in those type of miles as a matter of course.  No wonder you go 25 miles when you troll for salmon.

Well, got laid off due to covid so I've been kayaking like crazy lately.  I'm sure I'll tack back on the weight and reduce my range once I'm behind a desk 40 hours a week again LOL.

Actually, the reason for going so far is that I used to store the boat near the Duwamish Water Way which is both illegal to fish for salmon most the year and very polluted.  So I used to go to West Point (about 6 miles) or Alki Point (about 4 miles) before even starting to fish.  My record was hitting Meadow Point (just north of Shilshole) and doing a several trolling runs prior to heading back to the Duwamash which is where that 25ish mile trip happened.  Think I did that full trip twice.

Glad to say that I now have storage further north so the marathon-level kayaking is mostly a thing of the past.  Will probably try to shoot across to Jeff Head at some point when the water is calm but that's the extent of my distance ambitions now.
