To all of those who have helped put on the ORC in years past, THANK YOU!

What would it take to get the Tournament back in action?

I believe it has a lot to do with the required insurance coverage versus the potential tax liability from the entry fees. I may be entirely off base.

I would be more than happy to try reach out to potential sponsors. I just need to know what we need, or what needs to happen.

Thank you!

1) It only requires a desire to get it done.  If you can round up a crew of stoked helpers, it makes the job much easier.

2) There is no tax liability.  Just donate any extra money.  In the past, the funds have gone to "Neighbors for Kids" which has garnered a lot of good will with the charters and other locals.  Insurance can be purchased (ask Jed whom he uses) or you can leverage sponsors insurance.  We'd used Next Adventure's policy in the past and the Chinook Bend Campground once offered to cover the event.

3) Sponsorship starts with a form letter that is modified for each recipient.  The form letter describes the event, expected turnout and what benefit the donor might see such as page inches, pictures, word of mouth advertising etc.  From there, it's a bunch of e-mails to the manufacturers or distributors of gear that's used on fishing kayaks.  You can harvest names from announcements for previous ORC's or BCS events.  One donor route that hasn't been approached much is local hotels.

Easy right?  :D

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.  --Mark Twain

One thought I had after the 2021 event was to hold it at Fogarty.  It is a first come first serve day use area with a huge parking lot. As we saw in 2021, we easily were first at 4:30 am.  ;)  The next thought I had was that everyone just donate $40 straight to Heros On The Water.  Your donation receipt is your entry proof, but it has to be dated prior to the event, not made while on the water with a 22 pound Cabezon in your lap.  The day of the tournament, you show up with your fish and receipt at a specified time and upon weigh in you are entered in the chance to win the tournament.  That way no insurance is needed because you are not part of anything until you are safely back on shore. ;)  You are no one's but your own responsibility.

If people want to launch at Depoe Bay, they sure can, but weigh in is at Fogarty.  That way, the organizers can actually fish it and not worry about checking people in early in the morning. I haven't really fished it much since 2015 when I started organizing it. The reason I prefer Fogarty, is that there has been a lot of conflict at the boat ramp due to the various fisheries at the time of year we have been holding it (after July 1). We did not have those issues when we held the event on Father's Day, but most people feel the need to include Cabezon so we have to wait until July 1.  Personally, I could care less. The biggest fish is still the biggest fish.

Donations are the hard part.  We did have a nice kayak offered to us last year, but we had to get permission from the closest retailer that sells that brand to use it in a tournament.  Without a key person able to be involved in assisting with that matter last year, I did not want to fight that battle. Also, I had a shit-ton of stuff going on last Spring and summer and had little time to do anything else.
