I am desperate to get out for bottom fish and have been studying Thursday and Friday carefully, looking at 3 sources for Depot and Sunset Bay.  this is a really tough forecast and not consistent from all the sources.

looks to be 2 swells that are roughly 90deg apart, SW and WNW, reasonable periods (16s and 10s), if both end up being about 3', that's a real washing machine day.  one 3' and the other 2', not bad.  if both are 2', an excellent day.

wind looks very light all of Thursday, wind not an issue early Friday but forecast to get stronger as the day goes on.

and it looks a bit smoother to the south, out of Sunset Bay.  But Friday wind looks better out of Depot.

At this point, I'm leaning towards an early Sunset Bay launch on Friday when the swell forecast looks best, probably not make the long run to Simpson reef unless things are surprisingly smooth and if the wind comes up early, well that's how it goes.   ;D

Definitely thinking about it, but there is some good fishing closer to home. Hooked 4 this morning. Lost one, 2 wilds and a nice shiny hatchery. 17.5#.  Seemed like most boats got their fish.

I’m looking at Thursday and Friday.
I don’t like the south wind Thursday but it’s manageable I hope.
Leaving from Depoe.

Nice Salmon Bob! That from mouth of the lewis?  Need to look at tides but columbia salmon was a backup option.

Agree forecasts are not 100% ideal but itching so badly to get out... this is what I was seeing from windy @ Depoe:

ECMWF Model - 3'@6s and 1'@17s but 90 degrees apart
GFS Model - 3'@10 and 1'@13 also 90 degrees part

all the models seem to predict fog through the day which coudl be interesting.

I am considering PC Friday/Saturday weather dependent. Like rogerdodger, I looked at multiple sources and Windy seems to be least optimistic. I guess, I will make a final decision on Thursday.

and NOAA currently has Depot as 3' on 9s WNW and 2' on 15s SW on Friday.

Oh jeez. I had not seen the Saturday Forecast yet when I posted that. Never mind. What ever short decent ocean there is looks to be gone by Saturday.

Got a good look at the ocean early Wed driving from Florence to Waldport, very encouraging.  Nice spaced out swell from WNW but seeing almost nothing out of the SW.  Wind chop all but gone already!

PC camera showing some decent sets coming in at the moment...Hard to gauge how this is going to be on friday. Thinking maybe sticking closer to home and trying for a salmon

Planning on staying in the valley and hitting it at O dark-thirty on Friday morning before it gets too hot. Ocean is tempting, but hard to pass up the big fatties that are around right now.

just beautiful out of Sunset Bay today, I was out 9am to 2:30pm and the long period swell meant no motion sickness for me (seemed like just one swell from the W plus some very light wind chop from yesterday and no wind today). I fished Simpson reef for several hours, including off the west end, until the bite went off just after high tide, went all the way back to the NW reefs and finished off my rockfish limit there with 3 nice ones, no cabbys but a 26.5" lingcod early, released 6 including 3 that were in the 24" range but I was holding out for a big one and never found it.

if I had the energy to go early Friday, before the wind comes up, I would be trolling for salmon for sure...cheers!

A few of us launched at PC on Friday morning for salmon trolling.

I had a comically bad time getting through the surf. The low tide made for an almost shore break and I guess I wasn't ready for it. Broke my net handle, mirage drive fell through the hole top down so it wouldn't come out easy, a couple of other things were messed up so I'm sure I provided quite a few hearty chuckles from all the people watching. It was the ocean's way of telling me I forgot my hat. After I retrieved it from the car, I tried again and it was easy-peasy.

I wanted to check for chinook in close but that proved to be fruitless. It also burned some critical time because when we finally got out and found the coho at about 130 - 140 ft., we only had about an hour to make it happen before the bite died off. They appeared to be right at the 53-54 degree water and it was about 50-51 inside.

I caught one hatchery and released two jack chinooks. Lost a couple of bites. One other hatchery fish caught in our group and a wild released.

Very nice day out there. Pretty foggy but pretty much no wind until we were heading in.

Surf landing was nice and easy.
