I spent a few hours out of PC with James and a bunch of others. I got off the water early with a 28 inch Lingcod and 2 18 inch blacks. Released a few smaller fish.  Brisk east wind to start the day. Glad I took the wind with me when I pulled the plug.
What did I learn today? My fishfinder clock is an hour fast this time of year. Dammit!
I actually made it home when I said I would. That never happens! Hopefully never happens again!

Great to get some salt therapy!

bit of a washing machine day out of Sunset Bay, should have fished the reefs close and not spent the time pedaling to Simpson reef because there was no lingcod bite going on there for me, just a black and greenling.  Bad luck on my one crab pot, it was loaded up nicely, 9 well over legal size but alas, 6 of those were females...the 3 males I retained will at least make a nice pot of cioppino tomorrow!

Note:  the normal boat launch on the north side of Sunset is closed so that construction vehicles can use it to repair some road areas that collapsed.  However, there is now an open access spot for kayaks at the south end of the day use parking lot, you can't drive onto the beach but either normal or beach wheels will get you to the water.

Being retired, they pay me when I go fishing, therefore I am kind of a professional fisherman.

I fished Pacific City.  Kept two ling cod, nothing spectacular, but they were eager biters.  The rockfish seemed to have lockjaw for me.  I caught one right out of the gate, but released it hoping for something larger.  Boy, was that a mistake.  Had a few other nibbles later in the day but nothing else. As Drifter said, the east wind was quite brisk for awhile, had me wondering if the forecast was off.  Sometime around 11am it died off and everything was beautiful out there.  Hardly a one foot break at the beach on the way back in.  So nice to get on the water in January but boy it was cold when I got there at 9am.

"A venturesome minority will always be eager to get off on their own,
and no obstacle should be placed in their path;
let them take risk, for God sake, let them get lost, sun burnt, stranded, drowned,
eaten by bears, buried alive under avalanches -
that is the right and privilege of any free American."

My report is very similar to all the others.  I caught about ten lings.  Most were 23-25”.  Biggest was 28”. Only one rockfish.  Beautiful day on the water after Drifter2007 left.  I think this was my first time getting to fish the ocean in January.

one thing that I noticed between Sunset and Simpson was that there were jellyfish everywhere, not the big 'fried egg' jellys, these were 4" diameter sort of brownish ones.  and there were no murre or pelicans to be seen, or baitfish.  wondering if this is connected to the absence of any schools of black rockfish, some radio chatter had schools of them on the south side of Simpson.  the ones we caught were solo blacks down at the bottom.

I marked lots of big schools, they just all had lockjaw.
Wouldn't even eat whole or chunk anchovies.
