I personally don't use twitter much, probably because I don't have a smartphone.  However, I imagine there are a few of you who do.  With that in mind, I've set up a twitter account for NWKA's AOTY and I tweaked the AOTY site so that every time a new fish gets posted a tweet gets instantly sent out.

So if you use twitter here's what you need to know...

There's also a twitter link at the bottom of the AOTY page.

Yeah, I can't say it was an original idea.  But it was easy enough to implement with the Twitter API.

Anyway, I just deleted my test tweet that you might have seen.   The tweets will look something like...

If you're interested the NCKA AOTY has a twitter account too.

Well, that went over as expected... with very little interest.  At least I know who the real geeks of NWKA are now.

How about with a little more mass appeal like Facebook?  Any interest if I set it up so that new fish posted onto the AOTY site updates a facebook page for NWKA's AOTY?   You could even make comments/talk smack about the new catches within facebook.

FYI, we already have an RSS feed set up for recent catches if anyone is into that.

Brian

Can you just direct it to the NWKA facebook page?

I don't tweet, but I do facebook.  So am I a nerd or not?

I might be able to, but I think I would have to have admin access of the NWKA facebook page to link things up.

Thanks Allen,

After a little research it looks like Facebook Pages can receive twitter updates but not Facebook Groups (which we have).  Groups can be converted to Pages if you ask Facebook to nicely.

Oh well.

I do not participate in social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Loser, Bored, nor Obsessive, and would prefer my life not be chronicled there.

I pretty much feel the same about social networking sites. However, no one is saying that you have to participate in some narcissistic chronicling of your life.  I have had a personal twitter account for over a year now and I have yet to post my first "tweet" there.  I do however use that account to follow a few friends, but mostly I use it to follow some food carts and breweries here in Portland.  If I want to know what the special of the day at a cart or when that new limited release imperial pale ale is coming out, twitter is usually the first place these companies report things.

My intent with an AOTY twitter feed is that this is an easy way for me to push out updates on when someone has entered a fish to the AOTY site.   Most people probably don't care, but there are a few out there that do.

Thanks for the explanation.  What information will be posted on Twitter/Facebook?

My initial goal for an AOTY twitter account would be to post any new fish entered as soon as it is entered.  For example.. here is fictitious new entry...

Below that in your twitter client it would tell you how long ago that was posted.
The odd looking URL is simply a shorted URL of http://aoty.northwestkayakanglers.com/catch/show/317
which doesn't actually exist, but would the details of the catch on the AOTY site.

Other twitter updates might include...
-anytime the overall leader changes.
-when ever new features are added to the site

If you're a casual participant in AOTY having this sort of real time information isn't critical.  But for the geeks and competative types (they know who they are) this might be very useful.

Yeah twitter... lol.  Anything involving aston kutcher or receiving his endorsements/praise gets an auto-fail from me.

I like Facebook, makes it easier to stay in touch with old friends from HS, College, Army

I'm working on Facebook as well.  Facebook however is a bit more difficult to work with... for some reason they don't like folks (or programs) to post Facebook updates in ways that don't require them to view at a bunch of Facebook ads first.

I wasn't able to update the NWKA Group on Facebook.  However, I did create an NWKA AOTY "page" and I've managed to push AOTY updates to it via Twitter.  If you're on Facebook search for NWKA AOTY and become a fan of the page and you'll get updated every time someone posts a new fish to the AOTY site.
