Alkasazi has been kind of quiet on the board lately, but his marketing queen emailed me to remind everybody about the big event, and outdoorplay.com is putting up a $1000 purse for the winners.

Kayak 4 Cancer & The Dam Derby-
Fighting Cancer through our Outdoor Passions
Athletes 4 Cancer is excited to team up with the kayaking community to debut Kayak 4 Cancer at the Tenacity Games 2011!
Knowing that the WHOLE kayak community wants to help end cancer now, we chose a course that will challenge the endurance of the BEST kayakers and still include the most NOVICE of paddlers.
The first ever Dam Derby will be held on July 10, 2011 and start right below the Condit Damn on the White Salmon River.  Kayakers will race will down the White Salmon, across the Columbia River, and finish in front of the Event Site amongst hundreds of spectators.  This will be a test of will against the elements of whitewater, flatwater, and wind!  The course is about 2.5 miles in length and should take paddlers anywhere from 20-45 minutes to complete.  Paddlers will negotiate two class III rapids on their way to the mouth of the White Salmon and the confluence with the Columbia River. Kayaks must be under 10’ in length to qualify for prize money, but ALL competitors and crafts competent in class III whitewater are welcome.  There is a $500 cash prize presented by Outdoorplay.com for the winner of both the men’s and women’s event.
Athletes can register for the Dam Derby for just $50 or raise a minimum of $250 in donations. Athletes receive a swag bag of cool stuff, a ticket to Friday's Athlete & VIP dinner, lunch on event day, and entry to the Athlete & VIP party Saturday night. All proceeds from the Kayak 4 Cancer event will benefit Athletes 4 Cancer Survivorship Camps and First Descents -- both unique survivorship programs that utilize adventure as a channel for survivors to overcome challenges and gain confidence as they face life after cancer.
Please direct any questions to Race Director, Sam Drevo, from eNRG Kayaking- sam@eNRGkayaking.com

So I'm going to volunteer to work the starting line at this event tomorrow and the number of registered participants is surprisingly low. If you have a creek boat and are in good shape your odds are fairly good to walk away with Alkasazi's generous cash prize. Hope some NWKA's can make it up to participate. Outdoorplay shows us a lot of love, let's try and give some back.

On an interesting side note, the Condit Dam (the starting line) will be breached in October. The second highest dam to get demolished. The sediment trapped behind it will kill every living thing downstream. It will take 6 hours for the lake to drain. It will be kind of interesting to check out the before and after.

Hope to see some familiar faces up there.

Too bad about the low turnout. Good on you for volunteering.

You should take pics of the before and after and post 'em up.

See ya on the water..
